In Style has poached the US-born deputy editor of Elle magazine in a bid to boost its celebrity style and emulate the success of the American version.
Margi Conklin will leave her post at Emap’s Elle next month to become In Style’s deputy editor, a position held by Tammy Butt until she left to launch a travel magazine.
Conklin said In Style was a “natural home” because she grew up with the American edition as a teenager.
“I have always been a massive fan of the format of In Style,” she said. “I grew up in America and when it launched, it was very exciting.
“I wouldn’t say that they want to boost their celebrity content any more – they do celebrity coverage and health and beauty really well. Making it as practical as possible is what they are trying to achieve.”
Conklin will be responsible for features in addition to her role as deputy and hopes to draw on her experience of celebrity news and fashion.
She has a solid background in glossies, having edited Emap’s celebrity style magazine Looks before moving to Elle as deputy editor.
She began her career on The Journal, Newcastle, before joining Take a Break and later New Woman, where she was promoted to assistant editor.
Elle is in the process of recruiting a new deputy.
