The Citizen, Gloucester, has raised £250,000 for its Tsunami Appeal – one of the highest figures in the regional press.
UNICEF
regional fundraising manager for the south west Chris Wynn said there
was only one other newspaper in the country to bank a higher total than
the 30,000 circulation Citizen. That was the Eastern Daily Press which
has double the circulation and raised more than £350,000.
Citizen
editor Ian Mean set up the appeal after his features editor Vicky
Temple survived the disaster in Sri Lanka and wrote about her
experience.
Her piece was syndicated by the Press Association.
Mean said: “Gloucester is a small city of 108,000 people, and therefore
I am extremely proud that we have raised so much money”. Mean is
sending Temple back to Sri Lanka to report on the re-building of its
devastated communities.
