Gloucester’s The Citizen has remodelled its newsdesk operation on
The Evening Standard, which is also owned by Daily Mail and General
Trust.
The changes are to accommodate a new 7.30am first edition deadline
brought forward from 9.30am. The other editions go at 8.20am, 9am and
10.30am. The main news conference runs at 8.30am instead of 9.30am.
There are two further meetings, at noon and 3pm and a late duty reporter takes over from 4.30pm.

Ian Mean said: “I have seen this system operate very well at The
Evening Standard, and it is part of my overall news-gathering strategy
of getting smarter, quicker and earlier.
“When I visited the
Evening Standard, I saw how fast moving you needed to be on an evening
paper. It’s something the Standard does very well.
“The new
system is based on a constant dialogue between the newsdesk and the
production team that allows us to be more flexible and efficient.
Evening newspapers can get quite outdated, quickly. We aim to be as up-todate as possible.”
In
addition to the new system, Stephanie Preece has been promoted from
deputy news editor to news editor and Jenny Eastwood joins from the
Lincolnshire Echo as assistant news editor.
