The Newspaper Press Fund has finally changed its name to The Journalists’
Charity, in a bid to appeal to all sections of the media.
The fund, founded in 1864 by Charles Dickens, among others, had already renamed itself NPF – The Journalists’
Charity. Now it’s gone the whole hog and dropped NPF.
Chairman
Nicholas Jones told Press Gazette: “There is a lot of fondness for the
title Newspaper Press Fund, which dates back to Dickens, but we have
had to acknowledge if we are going to start raising money from
television, radio and the internet, we have to say what we mean.
“We are there for all journalists and their dependants, so we thought we must move with the times.”
The charity is currently trying to raise £6 million to rebuild its Sandy Cross residential care home in Dorking, Surrey.
