A free youth lifestyle magazine has been launched in Cornwall, underpinned by a strong environmental ethos.
The bi-monthly title, Stranger, backs up its campaigning stance for society to make more sustainable choices, by printing on 100 per cent post-consumer waste recycled paper and using vegetable-based inks.
“Our decision to print on recycled paper was an expensive one,” said editor and publisher Helen Gilchrist, “but integral to our message of being responsible.”
Aimed at 18 to 35-year-olds, it covers a mix of local and global lifestyle, environment, music, surf, news and current affairs features, with the core focus on art, skateboarding and fashion.
Gilchrist has returned to Cornwall from London where she spent three years freelancing, writing and section editing for a number of titles including Time Out and The Guardian . She set up the magazine with Prince’s Trust and government funding.
Also on board are art directors Kyn and Cai Taylor and editorial and publishing consultant Michael Fordham, who launched and directed award-winning magazines of his own such as Adrenalin and Bogey .
Slightly larger than A5, with a print run of 9,000, Stranger is largely written by freelances.
Gilchrist commented: “Our only competition is 24/7 Magazine which covers the whole of the South West and all types of entertainment.
Stranger focuses on soulful entertainment and is more editorially-led.”
