The Birmingham News has been sectionalised into three local “zones”
in order to deliver extremely local news as part of a relaunch.
The zones, or editions, will be targeted at the suburbs in the north, the southwest and the southeast sections of the city.
Birmingham readers have proved a difficult group to cater for because the city’s population is so ethnically diverse.
With
the new editions Trinity Mirror’s free weekly hopes to offer “very
local” news, while still focusing on the community and information with
more relevance to its readers. Tony Lennox, editorial director of
Midland Weekly Media, publishers of the Birmingham News, said: “Our
objective is to make the Birmingham News more relevant in the local
communities of Birmingham. We will aim to be much more of a local
paper, with three editions.
“At the same time we will continue to
offer full coverage of events in the city itself. Not only will this
give our readers a more focused local newspaper, it will also offer our
advertisers more choices and better value.”
As part of the
relaunch the News has been given new branding and page redesign, as
well as a new leisure and entertainments section.
