Glenwyn Benson, director of factual and learning at the BBC, has been appointed to the new position of controller of factual television.
The creation of a single controller of factual television is one of the changes resulting from a review of factual commissioning led by director of television, Jana Bennett.
Benson became joint director of BBC factual and learning, in March 2001. She began her broadcasting career at London Weekend Television and became deputy editor of the current affairs programme Weekend World before joining the BBC as editor of On the Record. In 1992 she was made editor of Panorama where she spent three years before taking charge of the BBC’s adult education programming.
In December 1997 she became head of science, responsible for programmes such as Horizon, Tomorrow’s World, QED, Animal Hospital, The Human Body, Earth Story and Radio 4 and World Service science programmes.
In 2000 she became controller, specialist factual in the BBC’s new factual and learning division with overall responsibility for science, natural history, arts, business, religion & ethics and history output.
The BBC will now seek a single director to head its factual and learning production division on the executive committee.
Benson will continue in her job until a successor is found.
