expressing “extreme concern” and requesting an investigation after one of its correspondents was detained by the US military in Afghanistan for more than 24 hours last week.
Kamal Sadat, a local reporter for BBC World Service’s Pashto and Dari language services as well as Reuters, was arrested on Wednesday at his home and his laptop and broadcast equipment were seized.
He was released early on Friday morning.
A BBC spokesman said the broadcasters had received a statement from the US Army, which included an apology, but still wanted to ascertain the full circumstances of his arrest and detention.
A BBC correspondent has been deported from Eritrea accused of “negative racist reporting” by the country’s information minister.
Jonah Fisher was expelled last Thursday after 18 months in the East African country, in a move that closely followed his press accreditation being removed without explanation.
Fisher was the only international journalist left reporting from Eritrea, a country with a history of clamping down on a press controlled by its ministry of information.
