£96m press deal means full-colour for Mail titles

By Press Gazette

Associated Newspapers
has announced a £96 million investment in new printing presses which
will enable it to produce every page of the Daily Mail and Mail on
Sunday in full colour.
A new £80 million plant is being
built at a brownfield site in Didcot, Oxfordshire, and comes in
addition to a £135 million five-year scheme to renew presses at
Harmsworth Quays, in East London, which was completed last November.
The new capacity will allow Associated to produce 128 pages of the
Daily Mail in full-colour and 160-page full-colour Mail on Sundays.
Associated chairman Lord Rothermere said: “This
is further evidence of our commitment to the long-term future of our
newspapers. At present on our presses at Harmsworth Quays in London, we
can produce half our pages in colour, but with the addition of the new
facilities at Didcot and enhancements to our existing press facilities
we will have the capacity to provide full high quality colour
throughout the country, providing even more value to our readers and
advertisers.”
The Didcot presses will be up and running by 2008
and the site has been chosen because of its central position and good
transport links with the rest of the UK.
Associated Newspapers has also announced plans to
spend £16 million on further upgrades to the presses at Harmsworth
Quays.
The move to full-colour is likely to greatly improve profitability for
the Mail titles because colour adverts sell for a considerable premium
compared with black and white.
