Sunday Times puzzle editor ‒ and veteran journalist of some renown, Barbara Hall ‒ received a well deserved MBE after 70 years in the business in this week’s birthday honours.
Strangely, her already incredible career received a bit of top-spin in the report which appeared in her own paper. It claimed that she had worked at the Bletchley Park code-breaking centre during the Second World War.
In fact, Axegrinder has learned that she did work in code-breaking during the Second World War, but just visited Bletchley Park once. Apparently the error was not in the original story ‒ but ended up in the copy after a comment was overheard on the subs desk, misinterpreted and then wedged into the final version.
What an enigma.
