News of the World editor Andy Coulson has resigned following the jailing of his Royal editor Clive Goodman for four months after being found guilty of intercepting the phone messages of the Royals.
Coulson said: "I have decided that the time has come for me to take ultimate responsibility for the events around the Clive Goodman case.
"As I've said before, his actions were entirely wrong and I deeply regret that they happened on my watch.
"I also feel strongly that when the News of the World calls those in public life to account on behalf of its readers, it must have its own house in order."
Coulson, 38, had been editor of the NoW for four years and led it to pick up a string of awards – including British Press Awards newspaper of the year two years ago. He joined News International in 1988 when he joined the showbiz desk of The Sun and cut his teeth editing the paper's Bizarre section.
News International has announced that former Daily and Sunday Mirror editor Colin Myler is the new editor of the News of the World.
Myler himself is no stranger to controversy, he left the Sunday Mirror in April, 2001, after an article printed in his paper committed such a serious contempt of court that it derailed the high profile assault trial of two Leeds footballers.
Since November, 2001, Myler has been at Rupert Murdoch's New York Post – where he was managing editor.
