The man behind the FT's pioneering Chinese business website has been promoted to overall publisher and managing editor of FT.com.
Ien Cheng is currently publisher of FTchinese.com – which currently has 450,000 registered users – and was responsible for launching and designing the site. He will move to London to take up his new role in August.
Along with the new job goes a seat on the FT's management board.
FT chief executive John Ridding said: "The development of FT.com is a priority for us, and we must be leaders in international business news and analysis online, as well as in print."
Cheng replaces Nigel Pocklington, currently director of online publishing, who is said to be moving to a strategy role at FT group.
FT.com attracts 5.5 million unique monthly users (according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations) and has 84,000 subscribers. According to the FT it has been in the black since December 2002.
