Pete Clifton has been appointed head of BBC News Interactive
following Richard Deverell’s move to become CBBC’s chief operating
officer.
Clifton will be responsible for all of BBC News’s
interactive and ondemand services including the BBC News website which
has had more than four billion page impressions this year.
He is
also in charge of Ceefax and Digital Text, interactive television and
broadband services such as the News Player which provides online news
clips on demand.
BBC director of news Helen Boaden said: “As well
as strong journalistic credentials, Pete will bring great creative
leadership, together with knowledge and enthusiasm to the role.”
Clifton
has been acting in the role since the spring. Prior to his role as UK
editor of the BBC News website he was the editor of Ceefax.
Outside
the BBC he was the chief sub on the Press Association’s sportsdesk for
three years, a sports sub at the Exchange Telegraph agency, a news
reporter and latterly the cricket correspondent at the Northampton
Chronicle and Echo evening paper.
