Both sides of the picket lines will have breathed an immense sigh of
relief on Wednesday morning when the striking journalists at the
Coventry Evening Telegraph returned to work.
The 25 days on
strike pay will have made it a miserable summer for many of them. The
difficulty of producing issues in their absence will have made it
equally miserable for their bosses. And Coventry’s newspaper buyers
have been caught in the middle.
Let us hope that next time, the
issue of low pay – a genuine concern for many in the regional press –
can be resolved before everybody loses out again.
