Cosmopolitan is returning to the campaigning trail this autumn with an anti-fur drive called Smart Girls Fake It.
In its September issue, the magazine is hoping to change the way young women shop, by portraying fur as unfashionable.
Cosmopolitan
has a strong background in campaigns, including Rape Stoppers and the
High Heel Vote, which brought women’s issues to the forefront of this
year’s general election.
Editor Sam Baker said: “Cosmo fashion
director Shelly Vella and I were at the shows in New York and Milan and
the sheer quantity of fur in the collections struck us.”
Designer
Stella McCartney is supporting the campaign. She said: “The crazy thing
is that fake fur is so amazing. Animals don’t have to suffer for
fashion.”
Baker said Cosmopolitan readers were unlikely to buy
entire fur coats, but they might buy fur trims and the new Mukluk
boots. “Many would be horrified to find out they had bought real fur.
Although you can’t draw any conclusions about our campaigns and
magazine sales, campaigns do draw attention to the power of
Cosmopolitan.”
