Sun associate editor (news) Paul Field has been allowed to leave the paper to work for the US publisher of National Enquirer, on condition that he doesn’t poach any of his former colleagues.
The no-poaching clause is understood to have been the main condition under which he was released from his year-long contract with the Sun. He has been on “gardening leave” from the paper for the last month.
Field is the first of up to 20 UK tabloid and magazine journalists who are expected to be poached by American Media.
More high-profile resignations are expected from UK tabloids and magazines in the next few weeks.
