After 44 years working at the Cornish Guardian, sports editor David Henderson has retired.
Henderson joined the paper as a junior news reporter in 1956 before moving to the Western Morning News in Plymouth, where he worked between 1963 and 1966.
He returned to the Cornish Guardian after that to take up the post of chief reporter before moving sideways to head up the sports desk.
Managing editor of the Bodminbased weekly, Alan Cooper, said: “Dave has had a remarkable career with the paper over more than four decades.
Always the true professional, he has become a legend on the Guardian and we are all going to miss him terribly.”
Henderson’s retirement was marked by a meal with friends, family and colleagues on the same night the sports writer turned 63.
The Cornish Guardian’s new sports editor is Kevin Marriott, 46, who was previously sports editor of the Plymouth-based Sunday Independent for six years. Before that he was sports editor of the Plymouth Evening Herald for nine years.
Marriott started his career at the Long Eaton Advertiser before moving into sports reporting with the Derby Evening Telegraph, where he spent eight years before his move to Plymouth in 1987.
