The former staff of a group of London weeklies joined each other to reminisce about their working days back in the 1970s.
Nearly 20 staff who worked on the North London Weekly Herald series travelled from around the country for a reunion at Southgate’s Ye Olde Cherry Tree pub.
Editor of the NewsEXTRA in Winchester, Mary Payne, who worked on the Enfield Weekly Herald from 1974 to 1975, organised the event. She said: “It went brilliantly. Everyone had a fantastic time and we laughed our way through an evening full of memories.”
Among those sharing the memories were former Herald editor Peter Edwards, who worked at the paper from 1944 until 1983, when it closed as a paid-for title, and Norman Rowe, the freelance photographer whose pictures distinguished the Weekly Herald’s Enfield edition in the 1970s.
Staff paid tribute to former Herald chief reporter Arthur Bax, who died in 1988. Chris Stokes, a former chief reporter of the Edmonton edition, said: “Arthur was a mentor to many of us and his inspiring influence on many individual careers lives on.
“He would have loved the reunion and we remembered him during the evening with enormous affection.”
