The Reading Evening Post has won Regional Newspaper of the Year for the second year running in the Newspaper Awards. Judges said that the regional press is no longer the poor relative and that the print quality was exceptional. “The Post was well presented, easy to read and a winner!” The Times was named National Newspaper of the Year. Despite the innovative move to a tabloid format by The Independent, which won it Innovation of the Year, The Times’s compact edition won praise as well as its consistency.
The Weekend Financial Times’s How To Spend It won the Heatset Colour Supplement of the Year award. It was the fifth year that the glossy magazine had gained the accolade.
Editor of the Production Journal, Gary Cullum, who was judging the awards, said that the newspaper industry is recovering: “The record number of entries certainly showed that newspapers are feeling more confident in their wares. And the overall quality of entries was also outstanding.”
Other winners included: Sunday Newspaper of the Year: The Sunday Times. Regional Weekly Newspaper of the Year: The Oxford Times.
Most Outstanding Use of Colour: The Herald. Coldset Colour Supplement of the Year: The Irish Times Magazine.
Most Innovative Technology of the Year: The Guardian and The Observer- digital editions. Newspaper Design of the Year: The Mail on Sunday. Best Daily Newspaper on the World Wide Web: Guardian Unlimited. Best Weekly Newspaper on the World Wide Web: Sunday Herald. Niche Market Newspaper of the Year: Angling Times
