New Newspaper Society president John Robertson has urged the regional press to “capitalise on its strength” as the leading gatherer of local news.
Robertson, deputy chairman of the Newbury Weekly News, said: “Even though it has been proved many times that when people want to trade – especially for houses, jobs, cars or household goods – they turn to their local paper, it is, by and large, the editorial content that retains them as readers week in week out.”
He told the NS council meeting: “In each locality we serve, our investment in editorial is massive compared with our competition. News is our lifeblood; we have a huge advantage over anyone else in being able to gather it. Let’s use it and capitalise on our strength.”
