The News of the World’s “Yellow Ribbon” campaign to support British troops has struck a chord with the British public.
By the end of last week, 500,000 readers had asked for ribbons and editor Andy Coulson expected that to rise to 700,000 by Thursday. He described it as “truly amazing. We are chuffed to bits.” People had been looking for a way to show their support, he felt, and the NoW campaign had given them the answer.
Every jockey in last Saturday’s Grand National wore a ribbon and there was backing for the campaign at other sporting events. Boxers Ricky Hatton and Vince Phillips wore them, as did players in the St Helens versus Leeds Rhinos rugby league match. Several Premiership footballers also wore ribbons.
