Sir David Nicholas, creator of News at Ten, is calling for more retired journalists to join the voluntary group Journalist Network.
Organised by the charity Community Service Volunteers, the network was set up in 2003 for retired journalists and PR professionals to help publicise the national and local campaigns of small charities. More than 200 experienced media professionals have so far helped 250 charities and community groups representing areas of the voluntary sector that could not afford to pay for such publicity.
Giles Oakley, former head of community and disability programmes for the BBC, says: “At a time when there are so many competing claims for public attention, often through spin and spurious celebrity, there has never been a better moment to give practical backing to charities and voluntary bodies.”
