Hopkins began his journalism career on local newspapers before he joined the Daily Mail as Midlands reporter in 1994.
He joined The Guardian as a news reporter in 1998 and became the paper’s crime correspondent in 1999. He was part of the team that won two awards for the Peter Mandelson “Home Loan” story.
