Daily Mail crime editor Stephen Wright is to cycle 700 miles from San Francisco to St Diego to raise money for police charity Care of Police Survivors and the Prince’s Trust.
Wright is hoping to raise £50,000 along with a team of five police officers and four support team members and will write a log of his experiences in the Mail and on the paper’s blog.
The group will fly out on 11 September and start the nine-stage ride at Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on the 13th.
Wright came up with the idea of the fundraising trip along with Scotland Yard detective Paul Settle.
He said: ‘The Mail’s been very generous and underwritten most of the costs of getting out there.
‘At a lot of the places where we will stop off, we are expecting local police to join us on their bikes as we enter their towns and villages, and we are going to get a police escort over Golden Gate Bridge.”
Wright said there is also a chance that the fundraisers will be met by the family of a murdered police officer.
