Fears for 14 jobs at Newsquest York and Darlington

By Press Gazette

Newsquest‘s plans to centralise the subbing operations for group of its papers in the north of England will result in 14 job losses, the National Union of Journalists warned.

Journalists at Darlington and York reacted angrily to news this week that production jobs would be transferred to Bradford, the union said, where four new roles would be created.

The union said that under the plans, editorial production of the free weekly titles in Darlington and York, as well as the paid for weeklies and magazines, would go to Bradford over the next six months. Sub-editing of the dailies would remain at the existing locations.

This latest proposal comes on the heels of an earlier editorial reorganisation at Darlington that brought together weekly and daily subbing teams and resulted in job losses and protracted strike action in the early months of the year.

NUJ chapels in Bradford and York also voted for possible strike action earlier this year that was only quelled when Newsquest lifted a near-three-year pay freeze.

Chris Morley, NUJ northern and midlands organiser, said union members in Newsquest were ‘punch-drunk’from a continuous stream of cuts across the company.
