100 jobs could go as Trinity’s Liverpool titles to print in Oldham

By Dominic Ponsford

Up to 100 print workers could lose their jobs over the next 15 months after Trinity Mirror announced plans to close its Liverpool printing presses.

The move ends 154-years of newspaper printing in Liverpool.

Morning title the Liverpool Daily Post and other Trinity Mirror titles currently printed in Liverpool will move to an expanded Trinity Oldham printworks over the next two months. Evening title The Echo will move next year.

Trinity has said there are no plans to switch the Echo to full overnight printing – meaning it looks likely to continue to carry on-the-day news.

But the move to Oldham is likely have a major effect on deadlines for The Echo as it is an hour’s drive from Liverpool.

Trinity has said it is investing £7.5 million in the Oldham print site.

Group director of manufacturing Rupert Middleton said: ‘This has been a very difficult decision given our history of printing in Liverpool and the impact on our team there.

‘But this plan will give the North West publishing business clear benefits of improved print quality, full colour and enhanced inserting capabilities that are currently unavailable in Liverpool as well as reduced costs.”
