Andy Phelan named new Exeter Express & Echo editor

By Press Gazette

Torquay Herald Express editor Andy Phelan is leaving the paper to take over the editorship of Northcliffe sister title the Exeter Express & Echo with immediate effect.

He replaces Marc Astley, who announced he was leaving the paper in December – three months after overseeing the Express & Echo's switch from a daily to weekly.

Phelan, who also oversaw the Torquay Herald Express's switch to a weekly in July, will be replaced by deputy editor Jim Parker until a successor is appointed.

Andrew Blair, the managing director of Northcliffe's South West Media Group, said: 'I am delighted to welcome such a high calibre journalist and experienced editor to the Exeter business.

'The Express & Echo, as Exeter's leading medium, operates in a vibrant growing city which rightly demands a lot from its local paper.

'I very much look forward to Andy being able to add a powerful new dimension to our business here.'
