CMP Information picks up four prizes at PPA magazine awards

Business publisher CMP Information was the biggest winner at the PPA awards on Wednesday night, picking up four prizes.

Building Services Journal was named monthly business magazine of the year, Sanjeev Khaira from Property Week was named publisher of the year, Sam Jenkins from Building was designer of the year and Farmers Guardian won the prize for editorial campaign of the year for Fair Trade for British farmers.

The winning campaign was run in conjunction with Natmags’ Country Living magazine and at its end, presented Food and Farming minister Lord Rooker with 52,000 signatures in support of giving British farmers a fairer deal in the food supply chain.

Consumer magazine of the year was Bauer Consumer Media title Grazia. The PPA judges called the title, which is just about to launch an Australian edition, “a media icon of our times” and praised what they called its ‘unsurpassed brand identity”.

Weekly business magazine of the year was Incisive Media’s Legal Week. The PPA judges said it was intelligent, not gimmicky and suited its readership. “It demonstrates great knowledge and advice, has good looking advertising and all the commercial figures are in the right direction,” they added.

Consumer magazine editor of the year was Maureen Rice, from Hachette Filipacchi monthly title Psychologies. The judges said that Rice had broken “truly broken the mould”. and achieved “a fantastic circulation in a difficult market.” They added: “A unique and intelligent magazine that stands out. Led by an experienced editor who understands the psychology of her market and has responded, a worthy winner.”

Business media editor of the year was Anthony Oliver from Emap Construct’s New Civil Engineer. Oliver oversaw the redesign of the magazine for the Institution of Civil Engineers and the launch of a website. The judges praised the title’s “fabulous editorial ideas with clear evident of energetic activity.

  • Business media brand of the year: Times Educational Supplement, TSL Education
  • Customer magazine of thee year: ASOS.Com (As seen on screen), Seven Squared
  • Consumer specialist magazine of the year: Autocar, Haymarket Consumer Media
  • Interactive consumer magazine of the year: newscientist.com, Reed Business Information
  • Business website of the year (paid for): workplacelaw.net, Workplace Law Group
  • Business website of the year (free access): BrandRepublic.co.uk, Haymarket Business Media
  • International consumer magazine of the year: FHM, Bauer London Lifestyle
  • Publisher of the year, consumer magazines: Linda Swidenbank, Woman and Home, IPC Media
  • Designer of the year, consumer magazines: David McKendrick, Esquire, The National Magazine Company
  • Publisher of the year (companies under £5m turnover): Gregor Rankin, Food and Travel, Green Pea Publishing
  • Writer of the year: Stanley Stewart, Conde Nast Traveller, Conde Nast Publications
  • Columnist of the year: Shazia Mirna, New Statesman
  • Writer of the year (business media): James Thompson, Retail Week, Emap Retail
