Times and Sunday Times claim paywall success as subscribers total exceeds 100,000

By Press Gazette

Just over a year after the websites of the Sunday Times and Times went behind paywalls the two papers claim to have hit over 100,000 paying digital subscribers.

For publisher News International, the milestone is vindication of an all-or-nothing paywall approach which shuts out search engines such as Google and ensures only paying subscribers can proceed beyong the home-pages of The Times and Sunday Times.

As print circulations for UK quality newspapers across the board continue to slide, News International insists that The Times website makes more money from paying subscribers than it did from online ads when it was free. The Sunday Times website has won a number of industry plaudits incudling six prizes at the recent Online Media Awards.
