National press fees for freelance football match reports falling

Sports journalist can earn as little as £30 for a Saturday national press match report, with no expenses, according to Norman Giller.

He said that this was the fee paid by some news agencies to freelances.

Writing on the Sports Journalists’ Association website, Giller said that according to SJA members, the going rate for a Premier League Sunday match report is between £120 and £180.

He said The Independent pays £85 and The Sun pays freelances £100. The biggest paying newspaper, he said, is the Sunday Times on £120.
