Much frustration at the Mirror, where the ghost of Piers Morgan has done few favours for the paper in the hunt for exclusives from the troops held hostage in Iran.
As Fleet Street scrambled to buy up Faye Turney and her shipmates, friends and relatives, Mirror hacks kept coming up against the “Piers factor” on the doorstep.
It appears members of the armed forces have long memories and remember some unfortunate pix which the Mirror published during Morgan’s time at the helm.
“The trouble was everyone in the forces still remembers those dodgy pictures which claimed to show our guys abusing Iraqi prisoners,” says one insider.
“It’s been a distinctly unhelpful legacy. It might help if Morgan finally had the good grace to say sorry.”
