Woolwich takes on BBC Two role

By Press Gazette

BBC One’s senior executive producer of current affairs, Paul Woolwich, is taking over the editorship of the BBC Two drama documentary series If.

Woolwich, who will continue in his old role, replaces Peter Barron who has become editor of Newsnight.

He said that there would be more emphasis on the dramatisation sequences and the programme will employ extra scriptwriters and drama directors on a project-to-project basis with BBC current affairs programmes.

He added: “We have to engage more people in journalism, therefore we will try all different formats and make it as accessible as possible. And if bringing in more dramatisation is the answer then so be it.”

The If series was launched in March to predict future “worst-case” scenarios such as “if the lights go out” and “if we don’t stop eating” and how we can tackle them if they did occur. The next series will be aired at the end of the year and will remain on BBC Two.

Woolwich is responsible for Kenyon Confronts and programmes involving the dramatisation of current affairs such as the one-off edition of Kenyon Confronts on the NHS last October.

Woolwich has also been behind a number of single-issue programmes, including last July’s Asylum.
