The latest sales figures show
that 18 of the top 20 newspapers in the US are losing sales, according
to the latest circulation figures.
Statistics show that
circulation of the San Francisco Chronicle is down more than 16 per
cent (to 400,000 copies), the Los Angeles Times is down more than 6 per
cent and the Orlando Sentinel is down 11 per cent. The Chicago
Tribune’s circulation is almost 3 per cent lower and the Baltimore Sun
has lost more than 8 per cent. Even The Washington Post’s sales are
down 4 per cent.
USA Today, the biggest selling daily, slipped 0.5 per cent to 2,296,335.
One
of the few papers to report a gain is The New York Times, which showed
a tiny gain of 0.4 per cent on weekdays and 0.1 per cent on Sunday. The
Wall Street Journal had a slight increase in online subscriptions, but
overall its circulation dropped about 1 per cent to 2,083,000.
Arch-rivals
the New York Post and the Daily News also lost circulation – the Daily
News by 3.7 per cent to 688,000 and the Post by 2 per cent to 662,000.
The Post’s Sunday sales were down more than 6 per cent to 425,000.
