Britain’s first online newspaper-based site, telegraph.co.uk, relaunched this week. The new site replaces Electronic Telegraph, launched in 1994, and provides a gateway to telegraph.co.uk’s network of 12 digital channels.
In addition to delivering news, the site links to a news archive of one million articles dating from 1994. The relaunch marks the final phase of the site’s redevelopment.
A 25-strong editorial team, led by Derek Bishton, who has edited the site for six years, will work around the clock to provide its content seven days a week. Specific searches will be quicker and more accurate.
The home page, News Panel, will offer ‘one-click’ access to the top reports of the day from four key sections – UK and international news, City and sport – while the News Ticker, an electronic ticker tape, will list details of the latest breaking news.
Bishton said: "Over the past six months we have increased the depth and breadth of our lifestyle content with the launch of individual, specialist channels. The new home page is the last piece of the jigsaw, making it easier for users to access this wealth of lifestyle information quickly and easily, while providing up-to-the-minute news coverage.
"As the first to launch, we have more experience than any other online news channel – our aim now is to build on the reputation and healthy traffic levels established in the past seven years." The redesigned site will also provide weather reports, including current and five-day forecasts for more than 3,500 locations worldwide and a daily menu of highlights from the lifestyle channels – including fashion, health, and gardening.
The new telegraph.co.uk reflects the comprehensiveness of the print editions of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph, said the company. My Telegraph, a clipboard tailored to the taste of the individual, will allow the user a choice of news coverage.
