…former Evening Chronicle staff. Almost 40 years ago the historic Macedonian town of Skopje was catastrophically destroyed in an earthquake which killed more than 1,000 people. The Evening Chronicle, Manchester’s second evening newspaper at the time, memorably recorded the event with the evocative front-page headline, “WIPED OUT”.
It was to be the last edition of the paper, which closed that day after being merged with sister, The Manchester Evening News.
Now, journalists who produced teat final issue plan to meet on the 26 July, the 40th anniversary, to look back on the history of the paper, founded in 1897.
They hope former Evening Chronicle journalists and their partners will join them. For more details contact Tom Waghorn on 0161 766 7304, Mike Taylor on 01273 727540, Max Hodnett on 01736 796721 or Kevin Lavelle on 01256 246913 or e-mail klavelle@tiscali.co.uk
