Catherwood to host press ball instead of Vorderman

By Press Gazette

ITV news presenter Andrea Catherwood has stepped in as host of the
London Press Club Charity Ball this week after Countdown’s Carol
Vorderman pulled out because of Richard Whiteley’s funeral.
Catherwood, who presents the ITV Weekend News,
said she was “happy to help out” with the ball in aid of The NPF The
Journalists’ Charity, despite being seven months pregnant with twins.
“It’s all in a good cause so I hope the babies don’t decide to arrive
that night – although it wouldn’t be a bad news story,” she said.
The sell-out ball, organised by the London Press
Club in aid of the NPF the Journalists’ Charity, takes place on
Thursday 7th July at the Natural History Museum attended by national
and regional newspaper and television editors, executives and
journalists.
Sponsored by Camelot and Audi, the ball is supported by major national
newspaper groups including the Telegraph Group, Associated Newspapers,
News International, the Independent Group and Guardian Newspapers as
well as other organisations such as Blake Publishing and Waitrose.
An Audi TT Roadster will be auctioned, along with
other items, by charity auctioneer Nicholas Bonham, with all proceeds
going to the NPF. Vorderman, who worked with Richard Whiteley on
Countdown for 23 years, will attend his funeral in Leeds on Wednesday.
Her agent John Miles told ball organisers: “Carol
is very sorry to have to let people down at the last minute like this
but she hopes you understand. She worked with Richard for 23 years and
needs time to get over his death and be with the family.”
Catherwood presents the ITV Weekend News. Until
recently she combined newscasting with her role as International
Correspondent, covering many foreign news stories in Sierra Leone,
Afghanistan and the Middle East. She was a member of the ITV News team
covering the war in Iraq where she reported on the battle embedded with
the RAF Forward Helicopter Unit and in Baghdad covering the immediate
aftermath of the conflict.
In November 2001 she was the first British
journalist into Mazar-i-Shariff after the Northern Alliance captured
the city from Taliban forces. She was injured by shrapnel while
reporting from inside the prison at the beginning of the Taliban
prisoner uprising, when a concealed grenade was detonated, killing five
people.
