Charlie Hebdo coverage helped Mail Online reach record 225m website browsers in January

By Dominic Ponsford

Mail Online hit a new monthly website traffic record of 225m monthly browsers in January, according to ABC.

Its biggest traffic days were 7 January (the day of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris) and 8 January when it attracted 15.6m and 15.7m browsers respectively.

Around one third of Mail Online's traffic comes from the UK (or 69.5m monthly unique browsers according to ABC).

ABC counts different devices accessing a site (rather than different people).

The Guardian remains the second most popular UK national newspaper website with an average of 7m daily browsers and 122m across the month, according to ABC.

The fastest growing website audited by ABC in January was the Liverpool Echo, which rose 122 per cent year on year to an average of 426,584 daily browsers.

The Manchester Evening News was the second fastest growing UK newspaper website in January, up 119 per cent year on year to 562,843.

Both sites appear to be reaping the benefits of digital-first relaunches by publisher Trinty Mirror with more emphasis given to rolling news.
