A new monthly magazine is due to launch in Whitby next month and it has recruited sacked Whitby Gazette editor Jon Stokoe as a columnist.
Stokoe was made redundant by Johnston Press in April despite being one of just a handful of local newspaper editors around the country to increase sales last year.
The new title for Whitby is called Whitby Mag and plans to offer advertising at a substantially cheaper rate than both the Whitby Gazette and existing free monthly the Whitby Advertiser.
It will have an intial free print run of 15,000 and will run to 96 pages.
Former accountant turned psychotherapist Kathy Finkel is behind the launch which will mainly rely on editorial content supplied by community figures, rather than trained journalists (with the exception of Stokoe).
Stokoe has launched his own company – Stokoe Media – offering media services and he has been working shifts at the Newsquest-owned York Press. He is also set to start a regular sub-editing contract at the Local World-owned Lincolnshire Echo in Lincoln.
