Sky News’ iPhone application has been downloaded more than a million times since its launch in May, the company said today.
Sky News launched its iPhone app last year, pre-empting a slew of launches of apps by UK news providers keen to take advantage of the popularity of the sort-after mobile device.
The Financial Times launched its free app last year offering the same tiered, paywall access as its website FT.com, with limited free use for unregistered readers and full access available only to paid subscribers. The Telegraph and The Independent also launched free apps.
The Guardian was the most recent paper to join the fray with the release of their £2.39 iPhone app last month.
In addition to its iPhone app, Sky News is looking to further increase its mobile readership with the launch of a revamped digital news service to provide articles, pictures and video for smartphones and text-only articles for more basic handsets.
