Ricki Dewsbury of the University of Central Lancashire was named the Student Journalist of the Year at today’s Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards.
Dewsbury earlier collected both the Scoop of the Year and the News Writer of the Year awards at a ceremony at Haberdashers Hall in London.
Dewsbury took the Scoop of the Year Award for an investigation, published in UClan student newspaper Pluto, which exposed a student involved in selling plagiarised essays to other students at several universities.
“We will hear a lot more about this journalist,” predicted the judges when awarding him the News Writer of the Year award.
Natalie Whelan of Leeds University, winner of the Student Editor of the Year Award, was highly commended for the top award.
The judges commended her news report about a student party that turned into a riot involving police baton charges.
“Natalie did an excellent job interviewing the people involved, interspersed with digital camera footage of the riot,” the judges said.
Six of the 11 awards went to entries from Preston-based UCLan, including Team of the Year for Homefront, a magazine which “hits spot-on the market it is supposed to be aiming for”, the judges said.
