The BBC has appointed as editor of Newsnight the programme’s current deputy editor, Stewart Maclean.
Maclean executive produced Newsnight’s notorious interview with Prince Andrew that prompted the prince to ultimately step away from royal duties. The BBC said Maclean oversaw negotiations between the Palace and Newsnight ahead of the encounter.
Maclean succeeds Esme Wren, who was announced as the new editor of Channel 4 News in November. He has served as interim editor of the programme since her departure following the new year.
