Worcester News journalist faces Taliban

By Dominic Ponsford

A journalist for Newsquest-owned daily the Worcester News found herself at the centre of a Taliban ambush when she travelled to Helmand province to spend a week with the 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters).

During her week at Camp Price Lucy Tatchell was taken on a reconnaissance patrol with a small team of Mercians when their convoy was ambushed by the Taliban they were involved in a 45-minute gun battle.

During the incident, British troops fired 400 rounds and 250 grenades before air support was called in to destroy the compound the Taliban fighters were using.

Tatchell produced a video of the incident which is now live on the Worcester News website.

She said: “My week with the Mercians brought home to me the reality of the situation in Afghanistan. Our soldiers are involved in contact with the Taliban on a daily basis.”

Lucy’s reports from the front line are being run for a week in the Worcester News, along with a series of online videos she filmed.
