Trinity Mirror makes regional managing director redundant for second time in six years

By Sam Forsdick

Trinity Mirror has made one of their regional managing directors redundant for the second time in the space of six years.

Robert Cuffe had previously been managing director for Trinity Mirror’s Teesside publications until 2012 when his job was axed.

He returned to Trinity Mirror in 2014, taking on the job of managing director for the North East, before being made redundant again this month.

Taking to Twitter, Cuffe said: “The company has reimagined the future. And it doesn’t include me. If I’m made redundant again [for a third time] I keep the trophy.

“Had a wonderful time and would like to thank colleagues [at the] Evening Gazette and Chronicle Live and wish them all the best for the future.”

During his time with Trinity Mirror Cuffe had worked on the Teesside Gazette and the Evening Chronicle, which covers the Tyne and Wear, southern Northumberland and northern County Durham.

In response to the news, colleagues and friends took to Twitter.

Peter Barron, former editor of the Northern Echo, said: “Sorry to hear this Bob. The regional media needs big characters who get out there and engage with communities. That’s what you’ve always done better than most.”

Ed Walker, digital editor for Trinity Mirror regionals, referenced the Gazette’s story on Morrisons’ 9am pie sales in his tribute.

“Sorry to hear this Bob,” he said. “You did, however, go out having seen The Gazette notch up one of the most incredible pastry-based stories there will ever be. One to savour. Wishing you all the best for the future.”

A Trinity Mirror spokesperson has yet to respond to a request for comment.
