Tindle journalists stage emotive protest in Enfield

By Press Gazette

Nine journalists working for Tindle Newspapers‘ Enfield Newspapers division began a first three-day strike yesterday in protest at non-replacement of staff.

They staged a demonstration in Enfield town centre and NUJ father of the chapel Jonathan Lovett dressed as a priest to ‘read out the last rites’over a coffin which journalists said symbolised the near-death of their titles.

The strike was prompted by non-replacement of staff which has led to the journalists producing nine different newspaper editions between them. There are said to be three reporters and one news editor at the centre.

Tindle management argues that it has managed to avoid redundancies by not replacing staff. The Enfield titles are understood to be losing some £200,000 a year.

Tindle managers have now warned staff that in the wake of the strike action redundancies cannot be ruled out.

The Tindle journalists said that the redundancy letters have ‘only galvanised them in fighting for the future of their papers”.
