Only a handful of weekly regional newspapers increase sales as nearly 100 leave ABC altogether

By Dominic Ponsford

Only a handful of weekly newspaper titles audited by ABC increased their print sales year on year in 2013.

The latest regional press circulation figures offer an incomplete picture of weekly sales as nearly 100 titles have resigned from the system altogether.

So whereas at the end of 2012 some 373 paid-for weekly titles were audited by ABC, today figures were announced around 270. The picture is further complicated by the fact that some titles are now audited six-monthly and some annually.

Scroll down below this story to see separate tables for weekly titles audited annually and six monthly by ABC.

Some 71 Johnston Press titles and 28 from Local World have resigned from ABC.

Of the paid-for weeklies audited annually by ABC, only seven out of 229 increased sales year-on-year. And of those risers, some may well be down to edition changes or mergers.
