NUJ members at Newsquest‘s redundancy-threatened newspapers in the North West have voted unanimously to take two days of strike action next week.
The strike is in protest at the company’s plans to make five journalists redundant across the Warrington Guardian, the Sale and Altrincham Messenger, and the Northwich Guardian. The strike will also affect the St Helens Star and The Wirral Globe.
In a statement the NUJ said its members were determined to press ahead with the strike unless Newsquest agreed to hold talks and suspend the redundancy consultation.
NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet said: “Our members at Newsquest Cheshire and Merseyside have shown by voting 100 per cent in favour of strike action and action short of a strike that they want to respond to the threat of compulsory redundancies. The NUJ is calling on Newsquest management to urgently get round the table and talk to the union.”

The two-day action begins on Tuesday.
Newquest chief executive Paul Davidson was unavailable for comment.
