The Nottingham Post has appointed Mike Sassi as its new editor.
Sassi, who is currently the editor of Stoke-on-Trent’s The Sentinel, takes over at the Nottingham daily following the death of former editor Mel Cook last month.
Sassi began his career at the Derby Telegraph in 1988 and has also worked at the Exeter Express & Echo and The South Wales Echo.
He was appointed editor of the Lincolnshire Echo in 1999 before taking the same role at The Sentinel in 2005.
Sassi said: “I’ve hugely enjoyed the absolute privilege of editing The Sentinel for more than seven years. Having such tremendous and talented staff has made it a pleasure to come to work every day. I am relishing the challenge of editing the Nottingham Post. I’m confident I can help it achieve great success.”
Sassi will take up his new role on 10 June, with the process to appoint his successor at The Sentinel already underway.
Steve Hollingsworth, publisher of the Nottingham Post, said: “I am looking forward to an exciting and positive relationship with Mike, as the Nottingham Post capitalises upon its greater paginations, increased story counts and a new approach to print and online news gathering in Nottinghamshire’s communities.”
Former editor Cook died in April at the age of 51, having only taken over the top job last May. According to the paper, he was diagnosed with cancer last autumn but continued to work during his treatment.
Before moving to Nottingham, Cook had been editor of the Scunthorpe Telegraph for four years.
