Mel Cook, the deputy editor of Norcliffe Media’s Hull Daily Mail has been appointed editor of another Northcliffe title, the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
Cook replaces Jane Manning, who has moved to become editor-in-chief of Northcliffe’s Kent Regional News and Media group, which includes the Faversham Times.
Cook, 46, has been with the Hull paper for 10 of his 26-year career. He joined from the South Wales Echo where he was also deputy editor and prior to that he spent five years at the Derby Telegraph.
Northcliffe said Cook has played a ‘major role’in the development of the Daily Mail’s multimedia content and is an expert in the paper’s Tera editorial system. He has also taken on more roles in the past two years after Daily Mail editor John Meehan’s promotion to regional director for Northcliffe’s North East division.
Meehan said: ‘Under Jane’s leadership the Scunthorpe editorial team also made great strides forward in multi-media publishing. Mel now has the opportunity to develop our services to readers in print and digitally still further and to ensure the Telegraph and its sister platforms are at the heart of all things local in Scunthorpe.
Cook begins his new role on 19 May and deputy editor Dave Atkin will remain acting editor at Scunthorpe until then.
From July to December 2007 the Scunthorpe Telegraph had a circulation of 20,568, a decline of 3.3 per cent year on year.
