Cambridge paper launches grassroots sport pull-out

By Press Gazette

The Cambridge Evening News is getting its hands dirty with a new eight-page pullout on grassroots youth sport in the city.

Youth Scene, which is sponsored by Barclays, will be inserted in the Iliffe News and Media-owned paper’s Saturday edition, will cover local sports clubs and school teams.

Murray Morse, the paper’s editor, said: ‘We knew grassroots sport was booming in our region, particularly girls’ football, but the interest Youth Scene has created among readers and local sports clubs and schools has been phenomenal.

‘The first issue covered more than a dozen different sports, including boys and girls’ football and rugby, tennis, BMX cycling, gymnastics, trampolining and karate. And each week we’ll have a page dedicated to a local school – in the launch issue the Kings School at Ely covered hockey, rugby and rowing.

‘Youth Scene is packed with team photos, results and league tables. The youngsters love it, as do their parents, aunties and uncles and grandparents.

‘Since we published the first edition of YouthScene Sport, we’ve been inundated by more clubs and schools wanting to have their results, reports and pictures included

‘We’ve also had a great response from local professional football clubs, such as Cambridge United and Histon, who have agreed to put up offers and prizes, or to send people along to coach children.

The paper’s sports editor, Chris Gill, said: ‘The ownership of these pages belongs to the youth of the area and we can’t wait to highlight everything that is good about local sport.”
