Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Times Online is switched off by News International

By Dominic Ponsford

News International has ‘turned off’ the old Times Online website, three weeks after it launched new websites thetimes.co.uk and thesundaytimes.co.uk.

Yesterday’s move means that The Times is no longer updating the Times Online site with content. Those who attempt to go direct to any of the Times Online landing pages will be transferred to the new website and asked to register.

Times Online will live on for those who search for old stories via search engines and who connect to them via old links on other websites, but older archived content will also be available via searches on the new websites.

The Times and Sunday Times websites are currently free to those who register but are due to go behind a paywall at the end of this month. After that time content will only be available to those who pay £1 for a day’s access, or £2 for a week.

Times Online has been scrapped as a result of the launch of the new websites which instead carry the newspaper mastheads: The Times and The Sunday Times.
